Historic District Nomination Submitted, Here's The Next Steps

The Laurelhurst Historic District Nomination and supporting pages have been completed and submitted. So has the Survey Data and the Intensive Level Survey with a detailed history of 15 interesting and representative houses in the neighborhood. You can read more about these reports, and the whole nomination and survey process, at the LNA’s website. If you have questions, email lnahistoric@gmail.com.

This work was done on time and on budget, by the LNA's consultant Peter Meijer Architect, dozens of neighborhood volunteers, and scores of University of Oregon graduate students.

Now, what are the next steps for our neighborhood's nomination?

Owner Objection Period Starts Soon.

In late August, the City of Portland will send notices to every house in the proposed district, informing owners of the pending nomination. The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) will then begin accepting owner objections to, as well as owner letters supporting, the historic district.

Stay tuned for more details. Talk to your neighbors. Laurelhurst residents voted overwhelmingly for the Historic District (83% support!) last year, but some of our neighbors still have questions and we may see incorrect information get circulated.

Landmarks Commission Review.

Our nomination will be reviewed by the City of Portland's Landmarks Commission, exact date TBD. The Landmarks Commission will provide its comments, but the city's approval is not required for a National Register district.

SACHP Review.

In late October 2018, Laurelhurst’s nomination will be reviewed by the State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation (SACHP), at their meeting on October 18-19. We will post the location of the meeting as soon as we know - it might be outside of Portland.

National Park Service Decision.

If the SACHP approves our nomination, in early 2019 SHPO will refer our nomination to the National Park Service (NPS) for final review and decision by the Keeper of the National Register.

Right now, it looks like the NPS should receive our nomination around March 2019.

Stay tuned for more details on the road forward.
